Nerdcore invades Newsweek

Still steaming from ytcracker’s MySpace blog entry, Nerdcore has made it’s way into Newsweek, Geeksta Rap Rising. It of course covers the story of ytcracker and how he got into rapping.

There seems to be a slight connection being made with nerd rapping and white rappers, which I don’t get. But couldn’t help but laugh when reading the article mention Vanilla Ice. Being that it’s Newsweek, the article also asked the question if this can go mainstream.

We all have our opinions, and people who read my blog know mine. But now that I think about it, if nerdiness become popular (right…) then it’s possible. After all, mainstream rap is related to drug dealing and violence, but it’s clear the majority of the population don’t connect with those messages. It’s all just entertainment. So maybe, just maybe, they’ll want to hear about our dark world, spamming… no?

Eh. Decent enough article. The white=nerd thing was a bit weird. I suspect that the author had Weird Al’s song in mind when writing it.

All I’ll say is that I think that nerdcore is positioned to take off. I remember getting into Kid Rock because his first big song was about mowing his frakin’ lawn. I could relate to that way more than some ditty about smacking your ho.

As for nerdiness becoming popular, it really has in a stealth way. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, The Geek Squad (just on 60 Minutes) et al. are all part of a redefining of nerdiness as an essential life skill these days. We’re the flint-knappers of the twenty-first century!

    Flint knappers?

Yeah, OK, it was a bit of a stretch.

Flint knappers were some of the earliest technologists, the shapers of stone tools. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flintknapper)
