The nerd search engine

Google recently came out with Google Co-op, where mere mortals like you and me can create customized search engines. I went and created one on what else, nerd music. So I present to you, the nerd music search engine.
The problem is that while I can tell it to search the entire web but put more “search weight” on certain sites, it does not work as I have hoped for. For example, a search for “router” still shows the Wikipedia entry and not much on MC Router at all.
So I took the second option, where I choose which sites to search. So far I have added the following:
- My site, of course
- Rhymetorrents
- Hipster, Please!
- Nerdcore Hip-hop
- Northwest Nerdcore
- Drown Radio
- The Takeover Radio
Of course, there are more that needs to be added. But I cannot do this alone, since I only have so much browsing time and can handle so many tabs at once. If you would like, please contact me and become a contributor to the customized search engine. It’s also set so anyone can immediately become a volunteer without my permission. So go crazy. But no spamming. OK, YTcracker?
Google lets you add the search bar to your site so I think if this is built well enough it can be a useful tool to help spread Nerdcore. Hope you guys can help out. Thanks for listening.

Damn, Glenn, that’s a fine idea! I’d love to help. You’re contact link seems wonky at present, but hit me up with any specifics and I’ll dive right in.
Your use of the term ‘nerd music’ begs the question, do you want to focus on the nerdcore/chip tune elements? Or do you want to expand it to include things like Wizard Rock, filk, or any other styles of music to come out of fandom (those are the only four I know about, but who knows what else lies out there.)
If you do want to go wide angle on this, I’d be up for throwing stuff in for Wizard Rock. I’m in the process of hunting things down now anyways so I can just add things as I find them. I’m also contemplating starting to look into the world of filk, but I’m not sure how well I’ll be able to cover something like that.
Let me know
Z., the contact seems to work fine, but I’ll get in contact with you later.
Matt, I think since it’s a search engine, we can make it fairly broad. It’s unlikely that a search for something in Nerdcore would also be in the Chiptunes scene. And if it does, the person searching should be able to tell them apart. So I say anything nerdy is a go.
Glen, the issue that Z is talking about is how you do your links. Glancing at your code, in the href section of your link you just put “Contact”. Because of this, when Z and I look at the entry using the perma-link we get the link ‘http://www.nerd-music.com/the-nerd-search-engine/contact’ instead of ‘http://www.nerd-music.com/contact’ Basically, you need to fully qualify even internal links. Either by putting the full link or possibly using “/contact” which may or may not work depending on how your system is set up (you may need to use “\contact” I can’t remember)
As far as the search engine, I’ll take a look at it this weekend and put in a few entries.
Thanks for clearing that up. All is well, for now.
I like the idea of spreading this out of purely nerdcore and into the full-on geek rock/chiptunes/filk/game music/nerd culture thing. What are your views on including nerd-heavy news entities like Boing-Boing and Slashdot as well?
I have no problem with that. There is so much to search for and it can only help. If it doesn’t work out we can always remove it.
I put in a volunteer request, but it’s still pending.
